All AVSC Nordic Team Programs are offered at the Aspen High School Trails or at Spring Gulch in Carbondale.
The Devo Team Program is a bridge between the Bill Koch Youth Ski League (BKL) Programs and Competition Team Programs. Although the emphasis of this program will be on skill development and fun, Devo athletes will work with coaches to learn how to set and achieve process goals. At practice, athletes will start to challenge themselves to make improvements as ski racers, teammates, and people. Devo Team athletes will progress towards mastering their ABC’s (agility, balance and coordination), learn ski specific technique skills, and improve body awareness. In addition, Devo athletes will be introduced to endurance, stamina, speed and dryland training. Athletes will learn some race strategy and pacing skills along with how to maintain and care for their own equipment.
The Competition (Comp) team will be geared towards high school athletes with a focus on ski training, skills, racing, and fun. The Comp team will have a highly motivated coaching staff with the ability to accommodate all skier levels from beginners to seasoned veterans. Athletes will work very closely with coaches to set process and outcome goals regarding their individual and team performance. Coaches will assist in the goal setting process to ensure all athletes the opportunity to reach their full potential as Nordic skiers. The Local Comp team will practice five or more days per week during the season with some additional summer training opportunities. The training focus will be on proper technique, speed, stamina, strength, and power development. Athletes will learn advanced race prep and pacing strategy. All athletes will be well versed the AVSC Nordic mission statement and help support their teammates in the development process. High level race/wax support will be provided at all CHSAA events.
The National Comp Team is an invite only team for experienced Nordic Skiers that have excellent work ethic and a year round desire to pursue excellence in skiing. The National Comp Team training regimen is designed to help athletes reach the highest possible levels of national and international competition, such as the Junior National Championship, Scandinavian Cup Qualifier Races, World Junior Qualifier Races, etc. In addition to the 5 plus day per week winter schedule, National Comp Team athletes will receive an individualized and periodized year round training plan, an online coach-monitored training log, and summer practice sessions. Athletes will have the opportunity to work directly with a coach to discuss personal training needs. Training will be based on current research and scientific principles. Athletes will be closely monitored throughout the training process via fitness testing and heart rate monitoring. All National Comp Team athletes will be expected to set an example of excellence at AVSC. Character, sportsmanship, work ethic, leadership, and inclusion will be an important part of the National Comp Team curriculum.
